CSIR–IGIB’s Phenome India initiative aims to accelerate genomics-based healthcare innovation
India has taken a major step towards advancing personalized medicine and data-driven healthcare with the launch of the Phenome India National Biobank and Longitudinal Health Study, spearheaded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR–IGIB).
This initiative will create one of the largest phenotypic and genomic health databases in India, enabling researchers, clinicians, and health tech innovators to drive evidence-based care, predictive diagnostics, and AI-powered clinical research.
Key Features of the National Biobank
- Collects biospecimens, genomic data, and lifestyle information from thousands of volunteers across India.
- Supports longitudinal health tracking, helping study chronic disease patterns over time.
- Powers research into rare diseases, cancer, metabolic disorders, and infectious diseases.
- Will enable development of personalized diagnostics, preventive strategies, and targeted therapies.
Collaborations & Industry Partnerships
The initiative is part of India’s larger push towards precision health ecosystems, complementing the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
CSIR–IGIB plans to collaborate with:
- Healthcare providers for clinical trial readiness
- AI companies for predictive analytics and drug discovery
- Global genomic research bodies for standardization and ethical compliance
“The National Biobank represents a leap in India’s genomic capabilities, making it possible to transition from one-size-fits-all treatments to individualized, evidence-based healthcare,” said Dr. Anurag Agrawal, former Director of CSIR–IGIB.
Transforming India’s Healthcare Landscape
The initiative is expected to improve healthcare access for rural and underserved populations by identifying India-specific genetic markers and lifestyle disease risks. It also aims to power AI-enabled clinical decision support tools, benefiting doctors and hospitals nationwide.
India’s Growing Role in Global Genomic Medicine
With the launch of the National Biobank, India strengthens its position in the global genomics and biopharma landscape, alongside countries like the US, UK, and China that have invested in national-scale biobanking efforts.
