In a strong push to improve mental well-being across India, mental health experts in Lucknow are advocating for mandatory counselling in educational institutions, workplaces, and public sectors.
At a recent awareness session organized at the Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) headquarters, leading psychiatrists emphasized that regular counselling can play a crucial role in early intervention, stress management, and emotional support.
Why Counselling is Essential:
- India is witnessing a surge in mental health issues, yet stigma and lack of awareness prevent many from seeking help.
- Experts say early-stage intervention through counselling can help manage stress, anxiety, and emotional distress — especially in high-pressure environments like offices and schools.
- Counselling also fosters empathy, resilience, and self-awareness, making it a vital preventive tool.
What the Experts Are Saying:
Dr. Adarsh Tripathi from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) stated,
“Mental health is not a one-time concern. Just like we need regular check-ups for physical health, routine counselling sessions should be the norm.”
Another speaker added that while therapy is often sought after problems become severe, early counselling can prevent mental illnesses from escalating.
The Call to Action:
The UPRNN event concluded with a unanimous recommendation:
“Make counselling a mandatory service in every institution — be it a school, corporate office, or public department.”
If implemented, this could pave the way for a healthier, more emotionally resilient India, where mental well-being is treated with the same urgency as physical health.
