In a major technological leap, AIIMS Bhopal is introducing 3D printing technology to assist in complex kidney surgeries, making it one of the few institutions in India to adopt this cutting-edge approach.
What’s New?
- Personalized Surgical Models: Doctors at AIIMS will use 3D-printed replicas of a patient’s kidney—created based on CT scans—to plan and perform surgeries with greater precision.
- Focus on Renal Tumors: This technique is being implemented especially for patients with renal (kidney) tumors, where accuracy and preservation of healthy tissue are crucial.
- Better Patient Outcomes: Surgeons will be able to study the exact size, shape, and location of the tumor before the actual procedure, which will help in minimizing complications and improving surgical outcomes.
Why It Matters
Traditional imaging provides a 2D view of the kidney and tumor, which can sometimes leave scope for error. The 3D printing technology gives surgeons a lifelike, tactile model that helps them simulate the surgery before making any real incisions.
Dr. Ajay Singh, from the Department of Urology at AIIMS Bhopal, noted that the use of such models is a game-changer, particularly in organ-sparing surgeries, and could become the future of urological treatments.
AIIMS Bhopal Setting an Example
With this innovation, AIIMS Bhopal is joining the ranks of advanced global institutions embracing 3D printing in healthcare, reinforcing India’s growing reputation for medical innovation.
The hospital is expected to expand this technology to other departments soon, possibly transforming the way surgeries are approached across specializations.
