PARAM Embryo Supercomputing Facility Launched at NIPER Guwahati to Boost Drug Discovery in Northeast India zyael talks

The PARAM Embryo Supercomputing Facility was inaugurated at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER), Guwahati, marking a major milestone for healthcare research and innovation in the Northeast. Established under the Advanced Centre for Computer-Aided Drug Design (ACAD), this is the region’s first high-performance computing facility dedicated to accelerating pharmaceutical innovation.

Transforming Drug Research with High-Performance Computing

PARAM Embryo offers 312 teraflops of molecular dynamics capacity and 150 teraflops for AI/ML applications, enabling faster drug discovery, molecular simulations, virtual screening, and AI-powered pharmaceutical research. This makes NIPER Guwahati a hub for next-generation drug development in India.

National-Level Support for Regional Growth

The initiative has been supported by the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) and the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India. Experts highlighted that the facility will help utilize Northeast India’s biodiversity and ethnopharmacology knowledge for global healthcare solutions.

Prof. U. S. N. Murty, Director of NIPER Guwahati, emphasized that PARAM Embryo will strengthen academia-industry collaborations and open new pathways for biotech startups and healthcare research in the region.

Future Roadmap

  • Development of a Natural Product Database from Northeast’s medicinal biodiversity.
  • Expansion of computational research under Phase II of MeitY’s high-performance computing initiative.
  • Increased opportunities for interdisciplinary innovation in pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

With this facility, Guwahati emerges as a strategic hub for advanced drug innovation, bridging technology, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
