The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarm over a catastrophic health emergency unfolding in Gaza, where 21 children under the age of five have died due to acute malnutrition since the beginning of 2025. The situation, described as a “man-made disaster,” is exacerbated by blockades on humanitarian aid, collapsing infrastructure, and a spiraling health crisis.
Unprecedented Health Emergency
WHO reports that health facilities across Gaza are overwhelmed, with more than 8,000 children currently suffering from moderate to severe acute malnutrition. This number includes 28 children in critical condition receiving emergency treatment. Despite the desperate need, limited access to fuel, food, and medical supplies is severely hampering the ability to save lives.
Surge in Malnutrition Cases
The number of children treated for acute malnutrition surged from 3,000 in April to over 5,600 in May 2025, marking a shocking escalation. Aid agencies warn that these numbers will continue to rise unless immediate and unrestricted humanitarian access is granted.
Global Response Urgently Needed
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgency of the crisis, stating that the lack of humanitarian access is “costing lives every day.” Medical professionals on the ground have echoed these concerns, warning of a looming famine if food aid remains blocked.
International Pressure Mounts
Global health organizations, including Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), are urging nations to act swiftly to prevent further child deaths and ensure that Gaza receives the critical aid it needs.
